Chapter Ten

Christmas came and went and so did the New Year. I was at home preparing to go to work. Brian had spent the holiday with his family in Louisiana, and no, his trifling ass didn’t invite me. No good bastard. Antonio had gone to North Carolina with his parents and sister to spend some quality holiday time. He asked me if I’d like to join him, but I declined. I didn’t want to send him or his family mixed signals about our relationship.

When I finished pulling my hair into a ponytail, I applied some lip gloss and slid on a pair of flats. I was ready to go to work and have a not-so-great afternoon. I had tons and tons of paperwork to do to get the hotel prepared for its semi-annual audits.

I was just glad Stephanie was going to be there to work the front desk. Bobby would be in after eight to relieve me. I glanced at the clock, which read 10:46 A.M., and decided that if I was going to get to work on time, I needed to leave now.

I arrived at work a few minutes after eleven, but it didn’t matter, since I didn’t have to clock in anyway. There were two young men working the counter I had never seen before. I assumed they were the new-hires Bobby had told me about. There was also a girl name Tammy, she was part-time, doing more flirting than assisting the new desk clerks.

I walked in and put my serious work face on. “Tammy, is everything all right?”

She quickly stopped her laughter and removed the smile from her face. “Yes, Mercedes, everything is fine. I was helping the new guys get acquainted with the system. That’s what Bobby asked me to do today.” She was getting smart with me.

I know Tammy didn’t like me, but it didn’t matter because I liked her even less. I decided at that moment that she would wish she hadn’t come in today by the time I was done with her. I put my fake smile on and said, “Really?”

I walked past the counter to the side door and put my key in the door. I did this because I knew Tammy wouldn’t open the door for me. I stepped in and said hello to the two attractive black men before me. “I’m Mercedes and you are?”

“Hi, Miss Mercedes, my name is Terrence.”

“And my name is Malcolm.”

“It’s nice to meet you Terrence and Malcolm,” I responded smiling. I turned to Tammy and said, “I know that’s what Bobby asked you to do, but something has come up and I need you to help the housekeepers today.”

“Unh unh, you are not serious. I’m not dressed to help no damn housekeepers.”

“Excuse me?”

“I’m sorry. I’m not dressed or prepared to help the housekeepers. Bobby told me I would be training Terrence and Malcolm that’s what I plan to do.”

I tilted my head to the left and stared her straight in her face. “Tammy, I don’t
